Many Devils Wash and Dead Mans Wash carve through this high desert terrain in the Shiprock Agency region. The landscape is defined by its water sources, most notably Sulphur Spring and the curiously named Stinking Springs, which sit near the intersection of various survey townships. These hydrological features provided critical life-sustaining points in an otherwise arid environment.
