Summerfield Ridge anchors this upland landscape in Morrow County, where the topography is defined by deep drainages like Sanford Canyon and Carmichael Canyon. This mid-1990s survey by the Forest Service and USGS documents the remote interface of private land and the Umatilla National Forest. The presence of the Balm Fork School along the Balm Fork indicates a localized community center in a territory otherwise dominated by seasonal springs and creeks. Many of these water sources, such as Sperry Spring, Skinner Spring, and Rhea Spring, are critical landmarks in the high country. To the south, the terrain rises toward Copple Butte, while the drainage system of Rhea Creek and its tributaries, including Coplinger Creek and Rutabaga Creek, carves through the forest floor.
