About this map

The Summerville area and the lowcountry of Berkeley County and Dorchester County are defined by a complex network of wetlands, including the Wassammassaw Swamp and Cypress Swamp. In the mid-1940s, the rural character of this region is evidenced by numerous country schools and houses of worship that anchored local communities, such as Black Tom Sch, Sheep Island Sch, and the St Johns Ch near Pinopolis. The landscape reflects a transition from agricultural experimentation at the Clemson Coast Experiment Station to the emerging transportation corridors of the Southern and Atlantic Coast Line railroads.
