Lake Umatilla dominates the center of this landscape, marking the state boundary between Klickitat County, Washington, and Gilliam County, Oregon. The northern bank features the small settlement of Bates and the winding Goodnoe Station Rd, while the southern shore is defined by the expansive Blalock Flat and the entrance to Philippi Canyon. This 2017 survey illustrates the managed water systems of the mid-Columbia, where Paterson Slough and Rock Cr meet the main channel. To the southwest, the confluence of the John Day River and the Columbia River creates a complex shoreline near the area known as The Nook. Deep canyons like Sand Spring Canyon and Swanson Canyon cut through the high plateau, revealing the stark relief of the Columbia River Gorge hinterlands. Local access is maintained through rural routes like Old Hwy 8 and Sundale Rd, connecting isolated springs such as Sand Spring to the river corridor.
