The Gabbs Valley Range dominates this 1970s landscape, a region defined by high-desert mining and isolated water sources. Prospecting activity is evident throughout the terrain, most notably at the Dunbarton Spring Mine and numerous unnamed mines and prospects scattered across the ridges. These workings are connected by a network of 4wd tracks that snake through the dry washes of New York Canyon and Volcano Canyon.

Vital water points like York Spring, Stone Cabin Spring, and Buffington Spring served as essential hubs for the few people traversing this arid territory. In the southwest corner, a lone Grave stands in the flats of Soda Spring Valley, a somber marker of the difficult life in the Nevada desert. High points such as Volcano Peak and Petrified Summit offer perspective on the vast basins of Calavada Flat and Sunrise Flat.
