The Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River carves a dramatic canyon through the center of this landscape, defining the transition between the high volcanic plateau to the west and the agricultural basin to the east. Within the protected bounds of the Namerio Grande Del Norte National Monument, the river's path is tracked by the East Rim Trl and Razor Blades Trl. To the east, the wide expanse of Sunshine Valley is marked by a network of early irrigation efforts, including the Number One Ditch and Number Two Ditch, which divert water from Latir Creek. The settlement of Cerro sits at the base of Guadalupe Mtn, while the Sunshine Valley Cem serves as a silent witness to the generations who have lived along the Old Sunshine Hwy.
