Ochocco National Forest dominates this landscape, where the high ridges and flats of eastern Oregon support a legacy of early ranching and milling. The terrain is defined by the steep elevation changes of Rail Ridge and Hardscrabble Ridge, which overlook numerous water sources including Blue Pot Spring and Wildcat Spring. Evidence of human settlement and industry is scattered across the topography, from the Robinson Homestead in the north to the Barnard Mill (Site) and the Ellingson Mill on the South Fork John Day River.
