Lassen National Forest covers much of this high-elevation landscape, where volcanic activity has left a lasting imprint across the Shasta and Lassen County line. The terrain is dominated by the prominent Butte Creek Rim and the expansive Halls Flat, with significant areas of lava flows noted in the southern reaches. Human presence is sparse, marked by isolated outposts such as Butte Creek Ranch, the historically evocative Suicide Cabin, and Mountain Home.
