Swan Lake and the winding course of the S Fork Elkhorn River define this high plains landscape in southern Holt County. The area is a mosaic of sandhills and wetlands, characterized by numerous ephemeral and permanent water bodies including Rush Lake, Round Lake, Long Lake, and Dimmitt Lake. These basins are concentrated in the northern and central portions of the quadrangle, separated by the low rises typical of the Nebraska Sandhills.
