Sylvan Peak and the surrounding high-elevation terrain of the Custer National Forest dominate this 2017 survey of the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness. The landscape is defined by massive alpine features like the Silver Run Plateau and Red Lodge Creek Plateau, punctuated by glacial carved basins containing Crow Lake, Lake Sylvan, and Lake Mary. Hydrographic data shows a complex network of drainage including E Rosebud Cr and the W Fork Rock Cr, which features dramatic drops at Calamity Falls and Sentinel Falls. Evidence of human access is minimal in this wilderness area, restricted primarily to the E Rosebud Lake Rd in the northwest. In the south, Quinnebaugh Meadows offers a rare break in the steep topography between Elk Mtn and the Silver Run Plateau.
