The high alpine terrain of the Beartooth Mountains dominates this portion of the Custer National Forest, where the protected Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness encompasses major summits and glacial basins. The landscape is defined by massive plateaus, such as the East Rosebud Plateau and Silver Run Plateau, which drop into steep drainages including the East Rosebud Creek Wild and Scenic River.
