The Salish Mountains define the high country along the border of Lincoln and Flathead Counties, where the Kootenai and Flathead National Forests meet. This 2014 survey captures a landscape dominated by timber management and drainage networks, centered on the small alpine basin of Sylvia Lake. The terrain is marked by prominent peaks such as Ingalls Mountain, Mt Conner, and Sanders Mountain, which separate the headwaters of numerous creeks. A complex network of forest development roads, including National Forest Development Road 168 and Griffin Creek Road, provides access to the higher elevations and interior valleys like Squaw Meadows. The map illustrates the contemporary intersection of public land boundaries and the watershed divide between Sheppard Creek and Hand Creek in this part of Northwest Montana.
