Saint Peters Mission Cem stands as a focal point of historical significance in this part of Cascade County, situated near the headwaters of Mission Cr. The landscape is defined by a series of prominent volcanic-looking landmarks, including Birdtail Butte, Haystack Butte, and Lionhead Butte, which rise sharply above the surrounding drainages. These geological features dictated the path of early travel through the Birdtail Divide and down into the Sullivan Valley. The network of watercourses, such as Trout Cr and Saint Johns Cr, supported the early ranching and mission life of the era. To the southeast, the terrain reaches its highest point at Telegraph Mountain, overlooking a complex system of creeks and buttes like Saddleback Butte and Black Butte that characterize this portion of the Montana front.
