The border of Northampton Co and Halifax Co is defined by the winding waters of the Roanoke River, here divided into the North Channel and South Channel as it flows between Lake Gaston and Roanoke Rapids Lake. The settlement of Thelma sits just south of the river, serving as a central point for a network of rural roads that stretch toward the water's edge. To the southwest, the landscape transitions into a series of smaller crossroads and residential clusters including Hinnes Crossroads, Gretna Green, and Roper Springs.
