The Snake River Range dominates this portion of the Targhee National Forest, where steep canyons and high peaks create a complex drainage system feeding into the valley floor. The settlements of Irwin and Swan Valley occupy the lower elevations along the western edge, positioned near Palisades Bench. This area is defined by its dramatic vertical relief, with Atkinson Peak and Baldy Mtn rising sharply above the winding corridors of Rainey Creek and Palisades Creek.
