Black Lake State Forest dominates this coastal landscape along the northern shores of the Lower Peninsula, where the waters of Lake Huron meet a complex network of inland hydrology. The 1971 survey highlights a rugged topography of points and bays, from Observatory Point to the sheltered inlet of Thompsons Harbor. Further inland, the northern reaches of Grand Lake are dotted with numerous islands such as Indian Island, Bear Island, and Applegate Island.
