The Lee Coffman Ranch serves as a lone human waypoint in this high-plains landscape of Natrona County, situated at the junction of Baker Cabin Rd and the drainage of the N Fork Cottonwood Cr. The terrain is defined by dramatic geological markers such as the Black Mesa in the northwest and the Gray Wall to the northeast, while the central portion of the sheet is dominated by the namesake Three Buttes. This ranching country relies heavily on a complex system of water management, evidenced by numerous man-made catchments like Big Chief Reservoir, Little Chief Reservoir, and Big Jerry Reservoir. These scattered reservoirs, along with the ephemeral reaches of Indian Cr and Three Buttes Cr, reveal the necessary infrastructure for livestock and survival in the Wyoming interior during the early 21st century.
