Tierra Amarilla and its surrounding agricultural valleys are defined by an intricate network of irrigation canals that have sustained this region for generations. This 2013 survey documents the crucial role of water management in northern New Mexico, mapping the course of the El Porvenir Community Ditch, La Cruz Ditch, and the Tierra Amarilla Ditch as they draw from the Rio Brazos and Rio Chama. These systems support a cluster of traditional settlements, including the Tierra Amarilla Historic District and the Los Ojos Historic District, preserving the layout of plaza-centered communities and ranching headquarters.
