Sullys Hill National Park and the Devils Lake Indian Reservation anchor this 1920s landscape on the southern shores of Devils Lake. The terrain is defined by a dense network of glacial lakes and depressions, including Mission Bay, Black Tiger Bay, and the prominent rise of Devils Heart. At the northern edge, the Fort Totten Agency and Fort Totten P O serve as a focal point for the region, while the Great Northern railroad cuts a diagonal path through the prairie to the settlement of Tokio.

A system of numbered country schools, such as School No 1 and School No 2, are scattered across the townships of Twin Tree, Wood Lake, and Hillsdale. These rural landmarks, alongside the Mission and Wood Lake Ch, illustrate the early 20th-century social fabric of the plains. The southern boundary is marked by the winding course of the Sheyenne River, which flows through the lower reaches of Bush and Tiffany townships.
