Tollgate serves as a central point of reference in this mountain landscape, situated near the shores of Langdon Lake along the boundary between Umatilla and Union counties. The terrain is characterized by a series of prominent ridges and deep drainages, including Rodgers Ridge, Boulder Ridge, and Coyote Ridge, which define the watershed for the South Fork Walla Walla River and Lookingglass Creek. Much of the area is protected within the Umatilla National Forest and the North Fork Umatilla Wilderness, preserving a network of historic routes and landmarks.
