Beartooth Mountains dominate the western horizon of this landscape, where the rugged terrain of the Custer National Forest gives way to a series of distinct high-altitude plateaus. The topography is defined by prominent level features such as Ruler Bench, Dilworth Bench, and the namesake Tolman Flat. This area, situated along the state line between Montana and Wyoming, serves as a crucial drainage basin for numerous waterways. Water is a defining element of the geography, with the North Fork Grove Creek and South Fork Grove Creek carving through the slopes. Local history is anchored at Tolman Cem, a small burial ground located near the junction of Grove Creek Rd and Dilworth Creek. To the south, the terrain descends into Mill Draw and Robertson Draw, punctuated by essential water sources like Corner Spring and Three Corner Spring.
