Mustang Creek and its complex of tributaries define the high plains drainage of this Kiowa County landscape. The water network includes N Fork Mustang Creek and S Fork Mustang Creek, which converge as they move across a terrain marked by subtle elevation changes and the seasonal flows of Sand Arroyo. Near the eastern edge, Trimble Lake serves as a primary local landmark in an area otherwise characterized by the rigid geometry of the Public Land Survey System. The map documents a sparse, rural infrastructure where the section lines of the Jeffersonian grid are literalized by a network of county roads, including Co Road T, Co Road 2, and Co Road 7. This 2013 survey illustrates the enduring relationship between western agricultural surveying and the natural watercourses that break its rectilinear pattern.
