The Santa Cruz River valley serves as the central corridor for this part of Southern Arizona, where the historic settlements of Tubac and Tumacacori-Carmen sit at the edge of the high desert. This 2021 survey documents the proximity of modern residential developments like Otero and Carmen to the protected grounds of Tumacacori National Historical Park. To the west, the landscape rises sharply into the Tumacacori Mountains, dominated by peaks such as Tumacacori Peak and Sardina Peak.
