About this map

The High Plains landscape of the Texas Panhandle is captured here just across the county line between Deaf Smith Co and Parmer Co. The terrain is defined by the ephemeral drainage of Frio Draw and the winding course of Tierra Blanca Creek in the northwest corner. This mid-century survey illustrates an agricultural region heavily dependent on groundwater, evidenced by dozens of irrigation Wells distributed across the flat, surveyed sections. The small settlement of Shelby serves as a local point of reference within this vast network of farm roads and fence lines. At the heart of the sheet, the eponymous Twin Lakes appear as distinct depressions, characteristic of the playa lakes that dot this part of West Texas, providing critical seasonal water sources in an otherwise semi-arid environment.
