Capitol Reef National Park and the striking Waterpocket Fold dominate this mid-1980s provisional survey of the high desert. The landscape is defined by massive sandstone formations, including Meeks Mesa, The Motorman, and The Castle, carved by the Fremont River and its tributaries. Near the confluence of Sulphur Creek and the river, the small settlement of Fruita sits adjacent to the Visitor Center, serving as a gateway to the park's canyon country.
