The North Dakota South Dakota state line bisects this landscape where the prairie transitions between Sargent and Marshall counties. In the late 1950s, this area was characterized by a rural network of small schools and local landmarks, including Palestina Ch and the Bergen Cem near the eastern edge. The northern portion is dominated by the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge, centered around the waters of Tewaukon Lake and the marshy Quant Slough.

Transportation and topography are defined by the Minneapolis St Paul and Sault Ste Marie railroad line, which cuts diagonally across the southern sections near Mountain Head. The drainage patterns of La Belle Creek and Shortfoot Creek carve through the glacial terrain, while several institutional sites, such as School No 1 (Abandoned) and School No 3 (Abandoned), reflect the changing rural population of the mid-20th century.
