Vermilion sits at the edge of the northern shoreline where the land meets the expansive waters of Lake Superior. This 2011 survey by the U. S. Geological Survey illustrates a coastal landscape defined by small inland water bodies and short, direct drainage systems. The settlement pattern is largely concentrated around Vermilion Point, served by a network of local roads including N Vermilion Rd and Vermilion Rd.
