Quicksand Creek and its many winding tributaries define the landscape of this eastern Kentucky region at the meeting point of Breathitt, Knott, and Perry counties. The small settlements of Decoy, Elmrock, and Vest are connected by narrow roads like the Elmrock Decoy Rd and Vest Talcun Rd that follow the natural contours of the deep hollows. This 2019 survey documents a terrain dominated by local landmarks and family legacies, evidenced by the numerous small burial grounds such as Bradley Cem, Whitt Howard Cem, and Compton Cem.
