About this map

George Washington National Forest covers the eastern half of this terrain, where the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the high ridges of the Augusta, Nelson, and Rockbridge county lines. The landscape is defined by its industrial and institutional footprint, notably the State Prison Camp No 10 and several scattered extraction sites marked simply as Mine or Quarry. Along the western valley, the Norfolk and Western railway corridor links the small communities of Vesuvius, Steeles Tavern, and Spottswood. This area is dense with local genealogy markers, including the Spottswood Sch and numerous country churches such as Old Providence Ch and Mt Carmel Ch. The hydrology is dominated by the Saint Marys River and its various hollows, including Stillhouse Hollow and Dogwood Hollow, reflecting a classic Appalachian drainage pattern.
