Volborg sits at the junction of several drainage systems in the high plains of Eastern Montana. The landscape is defined by the winding course of Pumpkin Creek, which dominates the central valley, joined by tributaries like Prairie Dog Creek and Flat Butte Creek. This ranching country is situated right at the border of Custer County and Powder River County, where the terrain begins to break into more complex coulees and divides.
