1987 Map of Volcanic Hills West

USGS Topo · Published 1987

About this map

The Volcanic Hills dominate this high-desert landscape on the border of Mineral and Esmeralda counties. In the late 1980s, this area remained defined by its mineral extraction and rugged topography, marked by numerous industrial sites including the F and L Mine, multiple Prospects, and several Open Pit Mines. The eastern edge of the Inyo National Forest meets the arid basins here, where water sources like Sand Spring and seasonal drainage through Sand Spring Canyon were vital landmarks for navigation.
