Volga anchors this 2015 survey of Brookings County, positioned at the edge of the distinctive Coteau des Prairies highland. This glacial plateau shapes the surrounding terrain, which is defined by its agricultural grid and natural water features. To the west of the settlement lies Lake Goldsmith, a significant body of water in an otherwise carefully partitioned landscape. The eastern portion of the quadrangle is traced by the meandering path of the Big Sioux River, which winds through the townships as it flows southward.
