The northern reaches of the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation dominate this high-desert landscape, where the terrain is deeply incised by a network of drainage systems. At the northern edge of the reservation boundary, the topography is defined by the winding course of Wahalee Canyon and the expansive Half Moon Valley. These features illustrate the complex watershed that feeds toward the Rio Hondo in the northeastern corner of the sheet.

Evidence of rural land use is found in isolated infrastructure such as Cow Camp No 2 and the Reservation Well, suggesting a landscape focused on ranching and natural resource management within the tribal lands. The map also traces the jurisdictional transition between Lincoln County and Otero County, following the Indian Reservation Boundary as it cuts across Maverick Canyon and Casey Canyon. A few scattered 4wd tracks provide the only vehicle access through these high-elevation valleys.
