Walton Junction serves as the primary focal point of this northern Michigan landscape, situated at the intersection of the Grand Traverse and Wexford county lines. The area is characterized by a high density of small, family-named burial grounds and historic markers, including Old Walton Cem, Walton Cem, Sparling Cem, Milks Cem, and the lone Iliff Grave. These sites suggest a legacy of early pioneer settlement and localized family clusters across the townships. The terrain is defined by a complex drainage network featuring Walton Marsh and Biglow Marsh, which feed into Walton Outlet. Modern recreational corridors such as the N Country National Scenic Trail and the N Country Iron Belle Trail now follow the same natural contours and former transport paths that once connected these rural communities.
