The Ruby River and its upper tributaries anchor this high-elevation landscape within the Beaverhead National Forest. This remote section of Madison County is defined by the sharp divides of the Greenhorn Range and the Gravelly Range, where the headwaters of Warm Springs Cr and the Middle Fork Warm Springs Cr begin their descent. Small, localized pockets of human activity are evidenced by the Plage Mine and numerous named springs, including Schoolmarm Spring and Holding Pasture Spring, which served as vital water sources for early ranching and prospecting efforts. The topography is deeply carved by gulches such as Golden Sucker Gulch and Sawlog Gulch, revealing a network of forest development roads like the Natl Forest Develop Road 100 Rd that provide access to high-country landmarks like Sheep Mtn and Fine Ridge.
