Warner Mountains peaks and steep canyons dominate this high-altitude landscape in the northeastern corner of California. The summit of Warren Peak and the nearby Squaw Peak tower over a series of glacial cirques containing alpine water bodies such as Patterson Lake, Cottonwood Lake, and Lindemann Lake. This environment is protected within the Modoc National Forest, where a network of primitive routes including the Summit Trl, Owl Creek Trl, and the historically named Tom Smith Cabin Trl cross the ridgelines. To the east, the terrain drops abruptly into Surprise Valley, where the drainage pattern changes from steep mountain creeks like Milk Cr and Steamboat Cr to the more regular grid of county roads such as Co RD 1. This map reveals the transition between the high wilderness of the forest and the open valley floor, where man-made infrastructure like Porter Reservoir manages the snowmelt runoff.
