About this map

The Independence Mountains dominate this high-altitude Nevada landscape, where the peaks of Wheeler Mtn rise sharply above the Humboldt National Forest. The eastern half of the map is defined by a dense network of drainages and canyons, including Water Pipe Canyon, Steer Canyon, and the appropriately named Starvation Canyon. These corridors channel water from the heights into various creeks such as Water Pipe Cr and Schmidt Cr.

To the west, the terrain levels out into the broad Independence Valley, a stark contrast to the rugged eastern ridges. This area is punctuated by family-named landmarks such as Jack Henry Canyon and Thomas Jose Canyon, reflecting the ranching and prospecting history of Elko County. Movement through this portion of the Great Basin is facilitated by NV-226 and N Tuscarora Rd, which connect the valley floors to the canyon entrances.
