West Boulder Plateau dominates this high-elevation landscape in Park County, Montana, where the headwaters of numerous drainages begin their descent. The terrain is defined by a series of creeks flowing away from this central massif, including Froze-to-Death Creek and Great Falls Creek to the east, and Falls Creek to the west. Evidence of historical resource extraction is found at the southern edge of the survey area at the Speculator Creek Mine, located near the base of Boulder Mountain. This high-altitude basin also contains significant alpine water bodies such as West Boulder Lake and Kaufman Lake. The drainage network, including the West Boulder River, illustrates the complex hydrology of this part of the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness region during the early twenty-first century.
