Sabine Lake dominates the upper reaches of this coastal survey, where the border between Texas and Louisiana cuts through the marshlands and water south of Port Arthur. The landscape is defined by a series of east-west trending cheniers, or sandy ridges, that provide the only relief in an otherwise fluid environment of wetlands and bayous. These features, including Sanders Ridge, Buck Ridge, and the notably named Salt Work Ridge, serve as critical anchors for local history and settlement in this corner of Cameron Parish and Jefferson County.
