Port Arthur anchors the northwestern corner of this coastal landscape, where the state boundary between Texas and Louisiana cuts through the waters of Sabine Lake. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent cheniers, or sandy ridges, that rise above the marshlands. These features, including Garrison Ridge, Sanders Ridge, and Garner Ridge, historically provided the only dry ground for travel and settlement in this wetland environment. Along the southern edge, La 82 follows these natural elevations, connecting remote points near the Gulf coast.
