West Twin Butte rises over the high plains of Golden Valley County, marking a landscape defined by the drainage systems of Elk Creek and Wannagan Creek. This late 20th-century revision captures a rural corner of North Dakota where small-scale markers of pioneer settlement remain visible on the land. The Little Missouri National Grassland encompasses much of the eastern portion of the map, where the terrain is etched by the East Branch Wannagan Creek and the Sixteenth Guide Meridian West.

Genealogists and local historians can locate early social centers of the community, such as the Westerheim Sch and the Plain View Cem. These sites, along with an additional Cem in the northeastern section, provide concrete evidence of the families who settled this area of the Badlands fringe. Industrial activity is minimally represented by a Scoria Pit, while the section lines and township boundaries of T 142 N and T 141 N provide the underlying legal structure for the scattered farmsteads and 4WD tracks that cross the breaks.
