West Valley and the surrounding high ground of Cattaraugus County are defined by a complex network of creeks and prominent hills. The terrain is deeply incised by Ischua Cr and Buttermilk Cr, which drain the uplands near Blue Hill and Bread Loaf Hill. In the northern section, the dramatic landform of Gunbarrel Gulf cuts through the landscape near the border of the quadrangle.

Genealogists will find a high density of burial sites throughout this rural landscape, including Saint Johns Cem and Mount Hope Cem near the main settlement, as well as the Holland Cem and Riceville Cem further north. The settlement pattern follows the narrow valleys, with Riceville and McKinstry Hollow serving as local hubs. These communities are linked by a grid of rural roads like Riceville Rd and Town Line Rd, which navigate the steep topography of Burns Hill and Canada Hill.
