The Tensas River meanders across the Louisiana landscape, defining the boundary between Madison Parish and Tensas Parish. Much of the northern terrain is preserved within the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge, a region characterized by complex hydrologic networks including Mack Bayou, Spring Bayou, and the oxbow-like Ridge Lake Bend. This late twentieth-century survey reveals a delta environment where small settlements like Westwood and Dearborn sit near significant archaeological sites, specifically the Indian Mounds located near Cypress Bayou.
