Whetstone serves as the central focal point for this section of Sumter National Forest along the border of South Carolina and Georgia. This area in northwestern Oconee County is deeply connected to its local church history, as evidenced by several large churchyards including Double Springs Methodist Church Graveyard and Monte Vista Baptist Church Graveyard. The drainage patterns here are complex, with the Chauga River and its various tributaries like Bone Camp Creek and Grapevine Branch carving through the terrain.
