Whetstone serves as the central focal point for this section of Sumter National Forest along the border of South Carolina and Georgia. The landscape is defined by the high elevations of Chattooga Ridge and numerous peaks such as Whetstone Mtn and Stumphouse Mtn. This area in northwestern Oconee County is deeply connected to its local church history, as evidenced by several large churchyards including Double Springs Methodist Church Graveyard and Monte Vista Baptist Church Graveyard. The drainage patterns here are complex, with the Chauga River and its various tributaries like Bone Camp Creek and Grapevine Branch carving through the terrain. Evidence of early infrastructure and local navigation is preserved in labels for Land Bridge Rd and Verner Mill Rd, while the small settlement of Tunnel Hill sits in the eastern reaches of the quadrangle.
