Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers dominate this high-altitude landscape along the border of Smyth and Grayson Counties. Located within the Jefferson National Forest, this terrain is defined by its ridge-and-valley structure, featuring prominent gaps such as Skulls Gap, Hurricane Gap, and Barton Gap. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds extensively through the area, crossing peaks and following the crests of Iron Mountain and Pine Mountain.
