Mt Rogers towers over this high-elevation landscape where the borders of Smyth, Grayson, and Washington counties converge near the Tennessee state line. This 2000 edition, based on earlier surveys by the Tennessee Valley Authority, depicts a terrain defined by the Iron Mountains and the Balsam Mountains. Settlement is sparse, concentrated in small clearings like Stony Battery and around numerous country churches including Rowland Creek Church, Bethel Ch, and Parker Chapel. Much of the area is protected within the Jefferson National Forest and Grayson Highlands State Park. The map documents the high-country path of the Appalachian Trail as it crosses Massie Gap and Skulls Gap, tracing the ridges that separate the drainage of Hurricane Creek and Whitetop Creek.
