Deerlodge National Forest dominates this high-elevation landscape along the border of Silver Bow and Madison counties. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent peaks and drainage systems, including Negro Mountain, Moffet Mountain, and Pandora Mountain. This area is characterized by an extensive network of mineral exploration, with numerous Prospects and Mines scattered across the gulches and slopes, particularly around Soap Gulch and Moffet Gulch.

Water flows through the district via Blacktail Creek, Wickiup Creek, and the long descent of Camp Creek. To the south, the landscape transitions toward Rochester Creek and King and Queen Hill. The density of survey markers and prospect labels reflects a persistent interest in the geological potential of these southwestern Montana highlands, where old timber and mining tracks trace the history of resource extraction in the late twentieth century.
