About this map

The San Luis Mountains dominate this arid landscape in southern Arizona, where mining operations and essential water infrastructure define the high desert character. Hard-rock mineral extraction is evident throughout the terrain at sites like the San Luis Mine, Arrieta Mine, and Brouse Mine. Life in this environment centers on a vast network of engineered water sources, ranging from Yellow Jacket Dam and La Minta Dam to numerous livestock tanks such as Lopez Tank and McKay Tank. Evidence of earlier activity is found at the Ruins of Carpenter Well, while the southern reaches of the map fall within the Coronado National Forest. This survey captures the complex water management system of wells and springs, including Coches Spring, required to support ranching and industry in the Puertacito Round Hill vicinity during the late twentieth century.
