About this map

Wildell and May are situated within the deep valley corridors of the Monongahela National Forest, a landscape dominated by the parallel ridges of Cheat Mountain, Shavers Mountain, and Middle Mountain. The geography is defined by its dramatic hydrology, featuring the winding course of Shavers Fork and the headwaters of the West Fork Greenbrier River. The historical footprint of the timber industry is visible through the West Fork Rail Trl, which follows the river path formerly occupied by logging railroads. High-altitude trails such as the Allegheny Tr; Marlin Mtn Trl and Yokum Ridge Trl traverse the rugged divides, connecting the numerous runs and creeks that feed into the larger river systems. This terrain preserves a classic Appalachian wilderness pattern, where human activity is concentrated along the narrow valley floors and historic rail beds.
