Shoshone National Forest contains the high-elevation terrain of the Absaroka Range, where dramatic geological formations like Cathedral Cliffs and Russell Peak overlook deep river valleys. The Clarks Fork Yellowstone River carves through the northern reaches of the sheet, creating the steep-walled Clarks Fork Canyon. This landscape is defined by an extensive network of historic access routes, including the Clarks Fork Trail, Russell Creek Trail, and Lodge Pole Trail, which trace the drainage patterns of the high country. In the west, the Luckinbill Airstrip near Swamp Lake serves as a lone point of aviation infrastructure in a territory dominated by gulches and draws. To the south, the terrain opens into Sunlight Basin, providing a topographical record of the transition from mountain peaks like Windy Mtn to the broader drainage basins of Park County.
